I think ad blockers started as a performance tweak and hardened into identity. Of course I block ads, everyone I respect blocks ads — that was the default sentence in my head for the better part of a decade. Then I spent a week testing how my own writing looked on phones and on a fresh profile, left the extension off “temporarily,” and the week ended with the toolbar still empty of activity.

What surprised me was not the ads I got back. It was the sites that stopped looking broken.

Half-pages are worse than banners

Consent dialogs finished their logic. Layout slots filled instead of collapsing. Embedded players and read-later tools no longer depended on a whitelist I had forgotten I curated.

The IAB Europe Transparency and Consent Framework describes how publishers, vendors, and browsers are supposed to coordinate these requests. In theory that is plumbing. In practice, blocking the plumbing left me debugging other people’s sites during ordinary reading sessions.

Some people prefer a quieter canvas and will trade breakage for it. I understand that reaction. But I also think there is something intellectually interesting here: the exception list had become a second hobby, and the hobby was costing me complete pages. Frictionless loading of a full layout beats a pristine page that needs three reloads and a guessed rule.

Relevance needs a feedback loop

Publishers can see which pieces get finished when measurement runs. That feedback loop is how headlines settle down and how topic pages improve. With the blocker on, I was a visitor who left no usable signal — correct in my own eyes, invisible in the stats that shape what gets published next.

I do not argue that every ad unit is a public good. I think the real point is simpler: once you remove the loop, you also remove your own small vote on what gets better. Whether that trade is worth it is a different question. For me, after a week of cleaner layouts and recommendations that matched what I actually read, it was not.

The blocker is still installed. It is simply off. That turned out to be the most low-maintenance position available — and honestly, the least interesting as an identity, which suits me better.
